Rural Northeastern Ontario Communities Recognized in their Continued Work to Meet Residents’ Health Care Needs

December 6, 2017– Two health care organizations in the Nipissing area are receiving a boost to improve the delivery of services to residents. The North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN) is investing just over $140,000 in the communities of Mattawa and Sturgeon Falls.

The North East LHIN is helping Mattawa Hospital with building infrastructure to provide more integrated care and improved coordination for residents living in the area. In Mattawa, Algonquin Nursing Home is redeveloping on the hospital’s property and will become adjacent to the hospital which will allow for a continuum of services between the two organizations. In addition, a residential hospice bed will be added to the site. Residential hospices provide medical, psycho-social, spiritual, bereavement, and other services to patients and their families in the final weeks of life.

The North East LHIN has also invested in West Nipissing Community Health Centre for the addition of a gymnasium adjacent to the centre to ensure it has the space it needs to continue offering a full complement of community support services and programs. The investment will help to sustain the health centre’s ability to meet the needs of clients and the community.

“We know that all Northerners want to be able to receive the quality care they need, close to home – and we are pleased to support our health service providers in helping to meet this goal,” said Kate Fyfe, Interim CEO, North East LHIN.

• NE LHIN is investing $100,000 to support Mattawa Hospital for site preparation in its work to provide more integrated care for residents.
• NE LHIN is investing $42,225 in the West Nipissing Community Health Centre for a long-term lease for the use of a gymnasium to provide community support services.
• These investments help to deliver patient care in response to the distinct local needs in the NE LHIN. The NE LHIN harnesses its local expertise and engagement with patients and local partners to plan, coordinate and deliver health care.
• Ontario is increasing access to care, reducing wait times and improving the patient experience through its Patients First Action Plan for Health Care and OHIP+: Children and Youth Pharmacare Program - protecting health care today and into the future.
• The NE LHIN provides more than $2 million each year to the West Nipissing Community Health Centre to deliver primary care services, and health promotion and disease prevention programs.
• The NE LHIN provides more than $6 million each year to Mattawa Hospital for health care services.
