Health Sciences North Foundation Kicks Off its fifth annual

Sudbury -- Earlier today, guests of the Taste St. Country Hoedown Kick-Off experienced a “Taste” of what the upcoming annual Taste St. event will have to offer. Guests were treated to food samples provided by The Keg Steakhouse + Bar and the Rock Garden Café and a simulation demonstration from the team at Health Sciences North’s (HSN) Learners’ Centre. The Kick-Off took place at Crosstown Chevrolet, where earlier this year they announced a $500,000 pledge towards HSN’s new Learners’ Centre.

"We were honored to host today’s Taste St. Kick-Off. We are truly impressed by the people delivering education to our medical community through the Learners’ Center,” said Vince Pollesel, Dealer Principal, Crosstown Chevrolet. “Their enthusiasm and commitment to quality education is wonderful to see. We can only imagine what a new Learners’ Center will bring!"

On Friday, March 23rd, HSN Foundation will present Sudbury’s premiere fundraising event in support of the new Learners’ Centre. The Country Hoedown will feature boot stomping country music, live and silent auctions and some of the best local food and drink available.

"The team from the Rock Garden Café at Health Sciences North, led by Chef Christian Haddow, is very excited to participate in the 5th annual Taste Street event,” said Stewart Brown, District Manager, Marek Hospitality. “Our chefs will showcase our fresh, from scratch, local approach to food, utilizing a smoker to produce awesome recipes that go hand in hand with this year's theme."

"This event is one that our staff looks forward to participating in each year. As Keggers, we always enjoy putting a smile on people’s faces by providing a good meal, but when you can do it in support of an organization like HSN Foundation, it makes it that much sweeter,” said Evelyn Hoffmann, General Manager/Franchisee of The Keg Steakhouse + Bar Sudbury.

Over the past four years Taste St. has raised over $260,000 in support of the Learners’ Centre. The hospital recently received the green light from the Ontario government to build a Learner’s Centre on the grounds of the Ramsey Lake Health Centre. The new 28,000 square foot facility will include classrooms, lecture space, work stations and on-call rooms. The focal point of the Learners’ Centre will be the Simulation Lab, which is designed to replicate medical scenarios such as an Emergency or Operating Room.

“This year's Taste St. is possible with the generous support of our sponsors, presenters and volunteers,” said Alex Patterson, Chair, HSN Foundation Board of Directors. “A big thank you goes out to our returning and new food and beverage presenters who make this event the huge success it is. On behalf of HSN Foundation staff, Board of Directors, and dedicated group of volunteers, we invite you come out and enjoy this year's Taste St. Country Hoedown.”

The new Learners’ Centre will accommodate over 2,000 learners each year. It will be used by medical students and health care professionals to advance their skills, improving patient outcomes in Northeastern Ontario.
