Health centre located in aundeck omni kaning first nation, Manitoulin Island (just outside of Little Current, Ontario).

Position:  Cultural Support Worker SADV

Region:  Manitoulin/Sudbury

Description:  Noojmowin Teg Health Centre is seeking full-time services of a Cultural Support Worker for the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Program. The successful candidate will possess a thorough theoretical knowledge of cultural management of sexual assault and domestic violence victims/survivors, their families and communities.

As the successful candidate, you will work closely with internal and external health and social service and justice providers within Manitoulin District and surrounding area. You will be a member of Noojmowin Teg’s multi-disciplinary team and will contribute toward strengthening the circle of care for each client. To successfully meet the program goals, you will require extensive related experience, and a strong collaborative and problem solving background and knowledge of historic and current socio-political and health issues faced by Indigenous peoples.
The Cultural Support Worker will be central in ensuring that victims/survivors receive high quality culturally appropriate, client-centred and wholistic care and will work alongside others to achieve this. Working closely with the Program Manager and other key stakeholders in the provision of care to the victim/survivor, family and community, you will reflect the Mission, Values and Guiding Principles of Noojmowin Teg Health Centre. This role requires a great deal of creative thinking in terms of program development, implementation and evaluation and strong advocacy skills.

Duties
1. Provide cultural support to victims/survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence, their families and communities
2. Coordination of Traditional ceremonies
3. Creation of Culturally appropriate materials
4. Engage in culturally appropriate health promotion and prevention strategies and activities
5. Advocacy

Qualifications
1. A relevant tertiary qualification in social work, psychology, or related behavioural sciences at degree level or diploma level
2. Relevant experience and competence in the human service field including experience in working with victims whom have been exposed or experienced trauma
Skills/Abilities
1. An understanding of the issues affecting victims of sexual assault and/or domestic abuse
2. Ability to work effectively in a team environment
3. An ability to provide support within a therapeutic context
4. An ability to work flexibly to meet the challenging needs of victims, their families and communities
5. Commitment to innovation and creativity in program development
6. Highly developed written and spoken communication skills
7. Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and ability to be self-directed
8. Computer skills in Microsoft Office packages
9. Understanding and appreciation of the community’s cultural diversity
10. Given the traditional practices of the Ansihinabek, from time to time, exposure to wood smoke and the burning of sacred medicines, including tobacco, sweet grass, sage or cedar, may occur within the work setting.
